Q:

Kevin uses technology to construct parallel lines. Kyle uses a compass and straightedge to construct parallel lines. In your own words, describe how Kyle's construction steps will be similar to Kevin's construction steps?

Accepted Solution

A:
Kyle construction steps would be:1) Drawing a point2) Drawing another point3) Putting the straightedge below both points and then drawing a line. We can call that line “A”.4) Setting the compass in a length higher than half the distance between those 2 points.5) Putting the compass with the center on one of the points and then drawing 2 arcs, one above the line near the center of the line and the other one below the line, also  near the center of the line6) Putting the compass with the center on the other point and repeating the process.7) Drawing a point where the arcs intersect (one point will be above the line and the other one below the line).8) Throwing a line that goes through those 2 points – This line will be perpendicular to the previous line. We can call that line “B”9) Repeating the whole process so that you have a “C” line which is perpendicular to “B”. That “C” line will be parallel to “A”.
You can make the same steps with a computer, but in that case it will be easier to draw the whole circle instead of part of it (just because of the options these softwares provide). But the easiest way will just ask for a parallel line. I assume that’s what Kevin made:1) Drawing 2 points. We can call them “a” and “b”2) Drawing a line. The program will ask you to click 2 points, then you click a and b.3) Drawing a third point outside the line. We can call that “c”.3) Asking for “parallel line”. Then you have to click a line and a point. Click the line and then click b.So this is much shorter, even though some of the steps are the same.
